POLICE ARRAIGN MAN FOR ASSAULTING ASP!

The police have arraigned 29-year-old Ariori Abiodun before a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court for allegedly beating up an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Rasheed Owoseni, attached to the Ajah Police Station.
The police said the assault happened on May 20, 2014 along Alesh Street in the Ajah area of Lagos while a team, led by Owoseni, wanted to arrest the accused and others, who were said to be taking drugs.
It was learnt that Abiodun and his cohorts, who are still on the run, injured the ASP in the jaw during the attack.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the three counts of assault when he appeared before Magistrate S.K. Matepo.
The offences, which are punishable under sections 409, 172 (a) and 171 of the 2011 Lagos State Criminal Law, partly read, “That you Ariori Abiodun and others now at large, on May 20, 2014, between 7pm and 7.30pm along Alesh Street in Ajah, in the Lagos Magisterial district did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit; assault.
“That you unlawfully assault one ASP Rasheed Owoseni with intent to prevent your lawful arrest and thereby did him harm on his jaw.”
The accused and nine other persons – Akindele Mutiu, Akinsemorin Olaide, Ahmed Ibrahim, Mustapha Habeeb, Akinpelu Bukumi, King Kayode, Ashe Lukmon, Agunbiade Kehinde and Banmodu Adeleke – were also charged with recklessness and unlawful use of drugs – offences to which they pleaded not guilty.
The charges read in part, “That you, Mutiu Akindele and others at large on May 20, 2014, between 7pm and 7.20pm, between Alesh Ajah and along Olomu Primary School, Ajah, in the Lagos Magistial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit; reckless and negligent acts.
“That you, on the same day, period, places and in the aforementioned magisterial district did administer poisonous substance on each other as to endanger your lives or cause harm to any other person(s) and thereby committed offences punishable under sections 409 and 249 (f) respectively.”
The magistrate granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties each in like sum.‎
