No fewer than 24,000 unemployed youths in Delta State are currently seeking jobs at the World Bank, European Union and the state sponsored employment and expenditure for results (SEEFOR) project in the state.

This figure is contained in the SEEFOR data board coming from the six pilot centres of the project which include Warri, Udu, Uvwie, Sapele, Ughelli and Asaba, with Asaba recording the highest number of applicants.

Speaking to newsmen, the state coordinator of the project, Mr Johnson Ojoko said that the project has a long-term plan of engaging over 30,000 unemployed youths in the state.

He stated that beyond the engagement of the unemployed youths on a contractual term of 12 months with N20,000 monthly stipends, the project has partnered agencies which have gone some steps ahead in making the beneficiaries become lifetime entrepreneurs by enrolling them into skills acquisition centres with plans to equip them with starter packs at the end of their six months training.

The coordinator disclosed that the skills acquisition would commence at the termination of their 12 months engagement with the SEEFOR project, adding that “the intention of the partnering agencies is not to continue to make them lifetime beneficiaries but to ensure that they are entrepreneurs who will soon become renowned employers of labour”.

While noting that the selection of beneficiaries were done on the basis of their special needs which among others, included their household size, dependants on the beneficiaries, the state SEEFOR coordinator explained that the youths would be engaged in labour intensive public works components of the project such as road maintenance, sweeping, cleaning of roads, painting of cabs, cleaning of drains, planting of trees/flowers among others.
