EBOLA: NIGERIA CALLS FOR SUBMISSION & VERIFICATION OF CANDIDATE DRUGS, VACCINES AND HERBS!

The Treatment Research Grouo(TRG) on Ebola Virus Disease(EVD) was set up by the Honourable Minister of Health on 4th August 2014 with an overrall mandate to provide guidance to Government on use and research into use of candidate drugs, vaccines and other biological for the treatment and management of EVD. This includes screening and verification of claims for actual products or knowledge on the processes for develoment on the actual products that may be used for these purposes. To this end, all scientists/herbal medicine practitioners with candidate drugs, vaccines, herbs and other biological for treatment or prevention of EVD are to submit documents supporting such claims for the consideration of the TRG-EVD which would in turn advise the Honourable Minister accordingly.

Claimants should submit their documents through a letter addressed to the Chairman TRG on EVD, Department of Health Planning, Research & Statistics, 11th Floor, Federal Ministry of Health, Phase III Federal Secretariat, Abuja. All claims are to reach this office on or before close of business, Monday, 22nd October 2014. Submissions of all claims shall be evaluated by a team of experts. Drugs , vaccines, herbs and other biologicals that are considered to hold some promise, following the first level of evaluation shall be selected for further evaluation by the TRG on EVD. Due to limited facilities that we envisage may be required for this second stage of evaluation, it may take a while to conclude. While it is recognised and respected that there may be claims for EVD treatment or prevention through some other means such as spiritual healing, this call is not for such other means due to inability of the TRG to validate such other claims at the moment. The TRG on EVD has as chairmen Prof. Karniyus Gamaniel, and Prof. Innocent Ujah.
