The former deputy national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George has declared that President Goodluck Jonathan has no anointed governorship candidate for the party in Lagos State. George made this declaration while fielding questions from newsmen at his Ikoyi residence, even as he recalled what Jonathan said to a chieftain of the party and former deputy governor in the state, Senator Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele. According to Bode George, Jonathan had told Bucknor-Akerele that he had no preferred candidate in the Lagos governorship race, but that anywhere he went to, he heard of a particular name. “It was Senator Bucknor who asked Jonathan and he replied that he had no preferred candidate but said ‘‘everywhere I go, I hear one man.’’
Speaking further, George said the lucky candidate must have sound education and a pedigree in the management of people and resources, adding that he must be respectable, responsible, acceptable and marketable. In his words, “I don’t decide. The people will decide. We have advised those in charge to go into serious introspection. We want somebody who will be marketable to the larger public and have track record of responsible character. We have to look at these qualities. At the end of the day, we’ll see how many that are left, but those bent on competing will be allowed to do so. And let the people decide. It will be transprent and will not be hijacked because the whole world will decide. We cannot afford to field anybody with thorns of albatross. They call me all sorts of names, but it doesn’t matter. We will follow the voice of the people. I am taking a cue from the center. It will be transparent”.
