CATHEDRAL CHURCH OF CHRIST, MARINA
This cathedral, located in the heart of Lagos Island, is the oldest Anglican Cathedral in the Church Of Nigeria Anglican Communion. For the masterpiece architecture, it is one of the finest of Cathedrals in Africa. It is the seat of the Bishop of Lagos, Rt. Rev. Dr. E. Adebola Ademowo, the Dean Emeritus, Church Of Nigeria (Anglican Communion). Established in 1869, Cathedral Christ Church which its current structure, which was completed in 1946, is the third church built to house its congregation and was designed by Architect Benjamin Bagandogi in a Norman Gothic style. The founding of Christ Church, Lagos, dates far back to 1853 when Christianity was brought to West Africa.
HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, EBUTE-ERO
St John’s Anglican Church (Aroloya), and Holy Trinity Church, Ebute-Ero are two of the oldest churches in Lagos. The 162-year-old St John’s Church is one of the frontier churches established by the pioneers of Christian missionaries activities in Lagos and Nigeria. St John’s Church which was then referred to as “Palm Church” was the second church after Holy Trinity Church, Ebute Ero to have the honour and priviledge of enjoying the pastorate scheme of the Lagos Native Pastorate Association in June 23, 1879. Many have asked why the name Aroloya - it was adopted based on the account of a popular cripple that resided near the Oloya Compound. The cripple made a habit on a regular basis to sitting at the entrance of the church, begging for alms. The lame man became known aas “ ARO-OLOYA”, which was later corrupted as Aroloya. Under Holy Trinity Church are St. John’s Church, Aroloya; King’s Church Enu-Owa; St. Andrew’s Church, Okepopo; and St. Philip’s Church, Omididun. The archdeacon-in-charge of Eti-Osa Archdeaconry is Ven. J. Olu Adeyi.
ST. PAUL’S CHURCH, BREADFRUIT
The story of evangelism in Nigeria cannot be complete without the mention of St. Paul’s Church, Breadfruit (SPCB) in Lagos. The 162-year-old church is the seat of the Lagos Archdeaconry and is mother church to St, Paul’s Church Breadfruit,St. Peter’s Church Faji,St. David’s Church Lafiaji,Bishop Tugwell Memorial Church, and Anglican Church of Transfiguration Okesuna.
OUR SAVIOUR’S CHURCH, TBS
This church was formerly called St. Saviour’s Colonial Church. The records of the Colonial Church contain a long note describing a service first held for the purpose of dedicating the Hall in King’s College for divine service on December 22, 1909. In 1923, the status of the Church was changed by the St. Saviour’s Church Council. Today, Our Saviour’s Church in Tafawa Balewa Square Lagos is the mother church of St. John’s Church Falomo; Church of the Nativity Parkview; Epiphany Church of Our Messiah, Tarkwa Bay; and First Fruit Anglican Church, Dolphin. Heading this archdeaconry is Ven. S. Igein Isemede.
CHURCH OF THE RESURRECTION, V/ISLAND
The Church of the Resurrection is the seat of the Victoria Island Deaconry of the Anglican Communion with churches like Anglican Church of Praise, Lekki; St. John’s Anglican Church, V/I; Ang. Church of The Living Soul, Oniru, Lekki; New Era Anglican Church Lekki; Ang. Church for All Nations, V.I.; All Soul’s Church, Lekki. Ven. Ifedola S. Okupevi is the archdeaconry of Victoria Island Archdeacon.
ST. PETER’S CHURCH, LEKKI
St. Peter’s Church Lekki, the seat of Peninsular Archdeaconry, is the headquarters of St. Peter’s Church, Ikota; Church of Advent, Igbo-Efon; Church of Redemption, Lekki; Church of The Epiphany, Gbara; Church of The Pentecost, Ajah; St James’ Church, Ikota Estate; Anglican Church of Transformation, Abijo; St James’ Church, Ogombo;and Anglican Church, Sango-Tedo. Ven. Samuel O. Ifeyemi is the archdeacon of Peninsular Archdeaconry.
