MY FATHER ONCE CHASED ME OUT OF HOME BECAUSE OF MUSIC – SAYS M.BRYO

Fast rising singer, M.Bryo, tells Saturday Beats about his rough beginnings

How has the journey been since you got signed to Rugged Records two years ago?

There has been the good and bad times but we thank God that we have been moving forward. I can categorically say that I am not where I used to be.

How easy was it for you to get into the industry?

When I started out, my parents were not in support of my career. It was so bad that my father chased me out of the house and I had to be living in the studio. But I just knew I would make it because of the passion I have for music. I was too passionate about what I was doing that I did not see any setback. I knew it would pay off one day and now, I am living my dream.

Why did your father have a problem with your career?

My father is an educationist who believes that all his children must get to the apex in any field they choose in school. Apart from that, my father is a pastor. I was the head of my choir department in church and I was the drummer, guitarist and pianist. I am the first son of my father.

Was that why you chose to become a professional musician?

I believe it is what I was born to do. I can recall that when I was about five years old, my father had a table tennis board at home and every evening when boys came to play, I would sit in their midst and they would be hitting the ball while I sang. They used to give me money and they would hail me. I grew up listening to songs and it started from church because I was in the children’s choir later I became the drummer of the choir. Music gives me fulfillment.

So why did you not become a gospel artiste?

I started as a gospel artiste but the management I was with then said I had to rebrand because gospel music in Nigeria does not sell. I changed my name and my style. My name was ‘G-in-Jah’ meaning Guy in Jehovah but I changed it to M.Bryo and it is an acronym for Music. Build Right Your Optimism.

What stands you out from other up and coming acts in the industry?

I believe that my style is different and unique. There are a lot of artistes who are doing great in the industry and I appreciate them but I believe in my style a lot. When established acts hear me, they doff their hats for me. My background in music is really deep.

How come you have been silent for about two years that you have been signed on to Rugged Records?

I have not been silent, I have been working and just last week I released a song titled Hallelujah featuring Patoranking and it is really enjoying massive airplay. I have been getting good feedbacks from fans all over the country.

Now that you are signed to a good record label, what is your parents’ opinion about your career?

After I left the house, my father and I were not in good terms for over two years but my step-mother would always call to check on me. The first time I got my father’s call during that period was when he saw me on the television. When I picked his call he said my uncles wanted to greet me and I was shocked. My uncles then told me that they saw my video on the television and that I had done well for myself. All I said was that I thank God. Till date, my father has given me his support and blessings. He lets me understand that he always prays for me and that I have his support as a father and his blessing as a man of God.

You said you did not grow up with your mother. What happened?

My mother left when I was about five years old, she had some issues with my father and decided to leave. I can remember that day, I was coming back from school with my younger sister, she was just leaving and she just passed us. I did not get to see her again till 2008 when my grandfather died.

How did you feel when you saw her?

She did not know us when she saw us. At first I was really angry then I realised that there are two sides to a story because the story my father told me and what she said were two different things. I felt that as adults, they should settle their differences but that is past now. He is my father and she is my mother and nothing can change that. Since then we have been fine.

Has your background in any way motivated you to become a success in life?

Yes it has because I know what it feels like to be living on the street and fending for yourself, I know what it feels like to have the talent but no funds to showcase it. I know what it feels like to wake up in the morning and not know where the next meal will come from. Living in such a manner, you begin to have some bad ideas and if you are not from a good background, you could fall into temptation. I have been there and would not want to return to such state and that is why I work so hard to be successful.

What were some of the challenges you faced?

To start with, it is not easy to live in a house without the woman you are accustomed to as your mother. Then you feel like there is some partiality happening in the house that does not favour you. You will be in situation where you are not always having peace of mind and begin to wish life was different. It was not easy but we thank God.
