President Goodluck Jonathan and his counterparts from Ghana and Cote D’ Ivoire, John Dramani Mahama and Alassane Quattara, are expected in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital today for the inauguration of the new 30,000 capacity stadium constructed by the state government. Also expected to grace the unveiling ceremony is world football legend, Pele of Brazil. The state’s Commissioner for Information, Mr. Anikan Ummanah, who briefed the press on the ceremony Wednesday night said every arrangement had been put in place to ensure success of the landmark event.
He said the project which was initiated and completed by the present administration is one of the prominent items on the transformation bouquet of the Governor Godswill Akpabio administration. According to him, the significance of the stadium to the development of sports in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, and indeed Africa, justifies the elaborate arrangements made to mark its official commissioning. The stadium is a two-tier structure which includes a 400m-running track for athletics. It is the pilot part of the Uyo Sports Park development. It sits on 36.3 hectares of land and is enclosed by a white triangular-shaped outer covering.
