The founder of Redeemed Christian Church of God(RCCG), late Pa Josiah Akindayomi was very fond of his children in his lifetime. This love, he extended to his grandchildren. It is worthy of note that at the time Pa Akindayomi began his ministry, it was thronged by a lot of barren women whose prayers were answered with the powerful prayers of the late man of God. Another set of people who came to Pa Akindayomi were parents who had concerns about the health and welfare of their new-born children. These 3 sets of people were trooped in droves to the church.
In a book, ’20 Pentecostal Pioneers in Nigeria: Their Lives, Their Legacies’ by Israel Olofinjana, it stated that, “Akindayomi had breakthrough in this ministry because he had a similar experience that helped shaped his ministerial formation. Four years after Pa Akindayomi and Mama Esther’s wedding, they remained children. ” The book records that they first had a male child they lost after 30 days, and another who died at the age of 25 years old after developing a strange illness. This tragic experience helped to shape his ministry.
The book further stated that “it seems that Pa Akindayomi had previously taken 2 more wives after Esther, but as he learned more from these Pentecostal Churches he was convinved of having just one wife. The doctrine of restitution which was becoming very popular among the Pentecostal Churches in Nigeria also played another factor in this conviction. This left Esther, the first wife, as his only wife.Akindayomi lived and preached holiness and restitution doctrines before the days of Deeper Life Bible Church of W.F. Kumuyi…. The usual ministry of praying for pregnant women continued and Akindayomi’s wife Esther trained and became a midwife helping more women to give birth in the church.”
Corroborating this in an interview sometime back, Pastor Bunmi Akindele(one of the daughters of late Pa Akindayomi said,”Baba was very much liked by ladies. Some would not even mind if they had no children for him. Towards the end of his life, Baba cut himself away from worldly affairs. He no longer got involved with family affairs, even though his children were living with him. And he made marriage restitution though it brought him problems. It was easy to do away with wives who had no children. But the one that had children, he told her to take anything she liked. He encouraged her to marry someone else. But he took care of all her children.”
