The death has been announced of Major General Suraj Alao Abdurrahman. The former Commander-In-Charge of the Armed Forces of Liberia(AFL) died 4 weeks ago (28th January 2015) in New York, where he was undergoing treatment for an undisclosed ailment he had been battling for some time.Commenting on a link about her husband’s demise, his widow Fatima Wali-Abdurrahman said,”On behalf of the Family, may I thank you all for your kind words. My husband loved Liberia, and saw it as our second home. In fact, believing he would beat his ailment, he told me we would go to Monrovia first, before Lagos. His time in Liberia was very fulfilling, as not only did he successfully hand over command (while he was undergoing treatment) to a Liberian Chief of Staff, he made so many friends that he really cherished. He has gone to rest, after a long battle, and he will be sorely missed. But his legacy will be our comfort. God bless you all.”
The late Major General held a PhD in Architecture from Heriot-Watt University in the United Kingdom. Born on September 9, 1954, Abdurrahman was an Architect, Engineer Officer of the Nigerian Army prior to taking up his post in Liberia. On Abdurrahman’s demise, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf sent a message of condolence to the Government and People of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.In her message to her Nigerian counterpart, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, President Sirleaf extended her heartfelt condolences to the Nigerian leader, and through him, to the Government and People of Nigeria, especially the bereaved family for the irreparable loss sustained. “We have learned with profound sorrow, the news of the death of Maj. Gen. Abdurrahman, former Chief of Staff of the AFL,” President Sirleaf declared with deep sorrow. The Liberian leader further noted that the late Nigerian soldier will be remembered for his “numerous contributions” made to the Government and People of Liberia, most especially his role played in forming the new AFL, in the spirit of African solidarity.Major General Suraj Alao Abdurrahman is survived by his wife Fatima Wali-Abdurrahman (nee Isa Wali) and his 4 sons – Surajudeen, Abduljabbar, Abdulaziz and Abdulmalik (from his 1st wife Mariam whom he divorced).
