The spokesman of the House of Representatives, Hon. Zakari Mohammed has said any attempt to extend the tenure of political office holders beyond May 29 would amount to a breach of the constitution. Addressing correspondents yesterday in Abuja, Mohammed said there is no provision in the 1999 Constitution that allows for tenure elongation. He further disclosed that the House was in support of the use of card readers for this year’s general elections.
He said: “We owe this country a lot of duty. Tenure elongation is against good conscience and not part of our constitution. We won’t accept that and won’t discuss any such thing. Our constitution is very clear on that, so there’s no going back on that. We must do things in accordance with the constitution.” On the use of card readers, Mohammed said it was time Nigeria moved forward from analogue to digital a system, saying every well-meaning Nigerian should support the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in its efforts to have free, fair and credible polls.
