#Nigeria: Pressure Mounts On Election Postponement As 6 Presidential Candidates Support Move+ Council Of State Meets Tomorrow

Ahead of the 14th February 2015 presidential election, 6 Presidential candidates and 16 political parties, yesterday, called on the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) to postpone the presidential and national assembly elections to either March or April this year to allow the electorate collect their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs). Addressing journalists in Abuja, yesterday, on the imperatives of shifting the elections, the Presidential candidate of the United Democratic Party, UDP, Godson Okoye, who spoke on behalf of the other presidential candidates and political parties, said postponing elections to March or April would reduce the insurgency in the North-East.
In another development, the calls for the postponement of this month’s general elections may be discussed at Thursday’s(tomorrow) Council of State meeting convened by President Goodluck Jonathan. The council consists of the President, the Vice-President, all former Presidents or ex-Heads of State, all former Chief Justices of Nigeria, the President of the Senate, all state governors and the Attorney-General of the Federation. One of the key responsibilities of the body is to advise the President in the exercise of his powers with respect to the Independent National Electoral Commission, including the appointments of members of the commission.
