#NigeriaElections: Federal Government Directs All Schools To Remain In Session

The Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, yesterday, directed all schools to remain in session during the forthcoming general elections. He also warned parents and guardians against disrupting school sessions during the elections. Shekarau disclosed this in Abuja while addressing journalists on the outcome of a meeting he held with 36 commissioners of education and officials of the Nigerian Universities Commission, National Board of Technical Education (NBTE), National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) and other stakeholders.
According to Shekarau , “We have had elections in the past where schools were in session and in view of the fact that this is just almost half way into the second term of the school calendar and in view of the fact that we have suffered long holiday during the Ebola incident with many schools battling to catch up with the lost period, there is no reason to close the schools,” he said.
The minister also directed all schools that are yet to commence their mid-term break to put it on hold, and those that have started to resume with immediate effect. He urged state governments to provide adequate security in all the schools used as polling units to protect the students and their property. He implored all state ministries of education to ensure total compliance with the directive in their domains.
