There is apprehension in Jos as no word has been heard from the gunmen who kidnapped Pa Dariye Defwan, the 87-year-old father of a former governor of Plateau State, Chief Joshua Dariye.
The gunmen, numbering about nine, were said to have stormed the home of the octogenarian in the Mushere area of Bokkos in the Bokkos Local Government Area at about 7.30 pm on Saturday.
They were said to have shot sporadically and in the confusion, whisked away their victim on a motocycle and headed towards Wamba in the neighbouring Nasarawa State.
A family source had told our correspondent that the kidnappers had demanded $10, 000 as ransom via a note they left behind.
However, more than 48 hours after the incident, the whereabouts of the octogenarian remain unknown.
There were speculations that initial contact had been made with the kidnappers, but it could not be independently confirmed.
However, the incident had been quickly taking some political undertones, as insinuations abound that the old man must have been kidnapped for political reasons.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Emmanuel Abuh, said the police were intensifying efforts to rescue the man.
