Police are investigating a vile racist tweet posted about Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck after he scored against his former club Manchester United in the 2-1 FA Cup victory on Monday night. He also received death threats on social media.
The tweet, posted by a user named AngeIsL made derogatory references that have been deemed too offensive to publish.
According to the Manchester Evening News, a user by the name of Nolove said: “Danny Welbeck will find you and I will kill you.”
Another user, Grande DeGea wrote “Hey Welbeck, when you die, I will celebrate it in front of your family.”
Welbeck celebrated his goal like it was any other, and while this may have triggered a backlash from United fans, some fully understood his decision to do so given the circumstances surrounding his United exit. One Twitter user said: “LVG ..
Welbeck pounced on Antonio Valencia’s poor back pass to round David De Gea and finish into an empty net to secure the Gunners a FA Cup semi-final tie against Bradford or Reading.
Many players recently have refused to celebrate goals against their former sides but the 24-year-old broke the mould, immediately being swamped by his teammates.
And Redknapp says the England international was right to enjoy his moment having been forced out of Old Trafford by Louis van Gaal.
“I just loved seeing Danny Welbeck celebrate his goal,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail.
“It is a load of tosh when a former player doesn’t celebrate against his old team.
“Goalscoring is why we play/watch/support — and it’s a while since Danny scored one!
“United didn’t want to keep him, he left for Arsenal and here he was back at Old Trafford scoring a predatory winner.”
