Nigerians victimization continues in South Africa

South Africa Metro Police Brutality on an Innocent Nigerian Woman

The victimization of Nigerians in south Africa has been dated back to as far before the ‘Ben Okolo’ publication. The South African based Nigerian had reported extensively the huge maltreatment
Nigerians receive in South Africa from both its people and government.
Much has been written by journalists about the victimization of Nigerians by the government and people of South Africa that a kind of animosity seems to be brewing between the two great African
countries and their people.

History proves that during the apartheid era, Nigeria amongst other independent African states fought for the liberation of their black brothers and sisters in South Africa. Assistance was provided
for the liberation movements both by the government and individuals. In fact, it is on record that the Nigerian government spent over US$61 billion in its fight against apartheid. Nigerians also
remember that after the 1976 SOWETO uprising, students of all levels in Nigeria were levied to contribute money towards the education of their black brothers and sisters in SA. The Nigerian High
Commission in Botswana during the apartheid era is reputed to have issued 300 Nigerian passports to black South Africans to travel the world with, since the apartheid government did not grant some
of them those privileges. On the musical scene, artistes like Ozzidi King, Sony Okosun (May his soul rest in peace) waged their wars against apartheid with songs like – Fire in Soweto, Papa’s Land.
Nigeria and indeed Nigerians were therefore thrilled in the early 1990s when the apartheid regime was decimated.

Early this morning, a Nigerian studying for his Doctorate Degree in South Africa reported another cruel victimization by South Africans on a brother from his motherland, Nigeria.
The reported story detailed that a young Nigerian (Name Withheld) who operates a bar in the vicinity of the University of KwaZulu-Natal(UKZN) for 5 years now without any problem or trouble was the
subject.

Recently, due to the influx of Nigerians into the University community and attendant higher patronage, his sales skyrocketed. This has resulted in fits of jealousy amongst resident South Africans
and in particular, the South African Indians in the community, as the bars in the neighborhood are mostly operated by the Indians.

A teamed up report was carried out falsely to the South African authorities stating that the Nigerian has been a menace and disturbance to the community. The South African police harassed and
arrested the Nigerian without warrant despite the fact that he operates with due License(Our Reporter sighted a copy). As at the time of filing this report, the said Nigerian is still being held by
the South African Police.

Nigerians in South Africa and other foreign countries who undergo victimization are on the increase and until the Nigeria government office in these countries look into the issue and address it,
these events will keep recurring thereby belittling the morales and standards of our citizens outside their country.
