Agitation for Senate President from North East suspicious – Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim

Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim from Yobe East has described the quest for zoning of Senate President to the North East as suspicious.

He, therefore, called on those behind the moves to jettison the idea so as to pave way for more serious and impactful programmes that would heal the wounds of people of the zone.

As the race for senate president hots up ahead of June 2nd inauguration of the 8th senate to be headed by All Progressives Congress (APC) having garnered 64 senators out of 102, Senator Ahmed Lawan from Yobe central had through North east caucus platform at the National Assembly has been stoutly canvassing for Senate President’s slot.

While speaking with our National Assembly correspondent in his office, Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim, Committee Chairman on Housing and Urban Development, described the agitation for the slot to the North East as unfair and self delusion in view of the magnitude of what the zone had lost in the last six years under President Goodluck Jonathan’s presidency.

He noted that it was suspicious for some members of National Assembly and their foot soldiers from the North East zone to seize this opportunity to start lobbying for senate president of the 8th Senate, which he said had infinitesimal positive effect going by unquantifiable wanton destruction of lives and property in the zone orchestrated by Boko Haram.

He urged all senators from the zone to soft pedal their agitation so that it would not be taken as part of compensation for loss suffered by the zone and go for meaningful and all encompassing programmes that would propel succour to the ravaged people in the zone rather than servicing an individual’s political ego-centrism under any guise.

He identified free and compulsory education for the people of the zone as the only programme that could re-integrate the people back into mainstream of national development now and in the future.

Abba wondered what could a Senate President could do beyond his paraphernalia of office, which at best favours few people around him and his immediate family.

“Look at the current Senate President, what has he offered from the federal government to his people back home as a Senate President other than what was entitled to him constitutionally? He is even going through credibility crises because of high expectation from his constituents, so to me it is not a reality”, he said.

Senator Bukar called on the incoming government to be headed by General Muhammadu Buhari to take cognizance of peculiarity of North East by consciously developing a blueprint for massive development of the zone.
