Nigerian Idol 5: The curtain draws near

It is not over until it is over and the last four contestants standing at the ongoing Etisalat-sponsored Nigeria idol know this.

Dolu, Nex 2, K-Peace and Preye did not leave any stone unturned as they gave their best in the last gala show, themed Love and Social Change.

The guys know that the end is almost at hand and as such, they wanted to impress the judges as well as the viewers in order to get massive votes that would see them through the next crucial stage.

With Nigerian rapper, Ikechukwu as the guest judge, the night began with a soft reggae rendition of Bob Marley’s ‘Redemption Song’ by K-Peace, which was described by Darey as a performance that had an element of originality. Preye continued in the pack with her rendition of Alicia Keys’ We are Here’, while Nex2 failed to impress the judges with his performance of Michael Jackson’s ‘Man in the Mirror’ which was seen as a performance that lacked control.

Twenty-five year old Dolu gave a mind-blowing performance of “A change is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke. Though Darey saw her performance as below standard, the other judges disagreed with him, as they described her performance as ‘excellent and full of passion.’

With four performances done, the Top 4 were made to hit the stage one last time with individual performances of love songs, and the small but mighty Dolu, began the round with her rendition of Whitney Houston’s ‘Will always love you,’ that earned her a standing ovation from Ikechukwu and the audience.

Unfortunately, K-Peace’s performance of Davido’s hit song, ‘Aiye’ didn’t meet up to expectation, while Dede described Preye’s rendition of Janet Jackson’s “That’s the way Love goes” as motionless. Nex 2 wrapped up the night with DBanj’s hit song “Fall in Love” but the judges said his performance was tensed, static and nervous.

The Top 4 contestants also had duet performances guided by the theme of the night. Preye and Nex2 took on ‘Let’s live together’ by Kush, while Dolu and K-Peace gave their all with ‘Endless Love’ by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross. Commenting on the performances of the night, Dede gave a thumbs-up to the female contestants, noting that, “Tonight, the girls, especially Dolu gave much more than the guys.’’ This was corroborated by Ikechukwu who gave Dolu a standing ovation while she was performing.

Speaking in the same vein, Manager, Sponsorships, Etisalat Nigeria, Orah Egwu said the night was the ladies night. Egwu said, “It appears the ladies were better prepared tonight than the guys. I strongly advise the guys to watch their back.”
