Why Ojudu Should Continue with Fayose’S Impeachment Project – Group

The Nigerian Human Rights Community (NHRC), a coalition of 35 civil rights groups, has called on Senator Babafemi Ojudu to intensify the campaign for the impeachment of Ekiti State Governor, AyodeleFayose.

The group said in a statement that the impeachment move is an historical calling that has the backing of the progressives across the world.

According to the group, it is unfortunate that the Ekiti State Government under Fayose has dedicated huge sum of funds to malign, blackmail and destroy the reputation of one of Nigeria’s most remarkable heroes.

The group which expressed solidarity with Ojudu, representing Ekiti Central, who is being maligned for leading the campaign to sanitise distressed Ekiti State, the small agrarian state thrown into turmoil following the June 21 election that saw Fayose emerging as the governor, praised Ojudu for his long-standing record as a tireless defender of truth and liberty, a trait that has won him global fame.

According to the statement, signed by the NHRC Director of Publicity, AkinolaGbadamosi, the urged Ekiti people not to be distracted by the conscious efforts of Fayose to discredit one of the most outstanding icons in the battle for liberty in Ekiti State and in Nigeria at large.

“Senator Ojudu has a clean record spanning over three decades. He was the journalist that exposed Fayose during his first term in 2004. Senator Ojudu did not only write an investigative story that exposed the killing of a pregnant woman for rituals, an unspeakable crime involving top government officials in the administration of Fayose, he went the extra mile to ensure the arrest of those involved. The stories were published in The News Magazine.

“The horrendous crime was swept under the carpet by the then authorities. From that moment, a seed of discord was planted between Ojudu and MrFayose”, the group said.

It added: “Senator Ojudu was detained for several years on his account of being opposed to the late Gen SaniAbacha who persecuted Nigerians. It is a subject of disgrace that MrFayose with all the atrocities he has committed against humanity finds himself at the helms of Ekiti’s moral order. When he came to power last October, the first thing he did was to discredit his predecessor through lies and propaganda about the amount spent on the OkeAyoba whereas within a short period he occupied the house he spen over N200 million on renovation. At present, MrFayose is awarding contracts to his cronies without due process while he has refused to release the money meant for workers salary.

“We are following with keen interest the developments in Ekiti State. MrFayose wants to do everything to destroy MrOjudu’s richly deserved reputation built with sweat and from the ruins of the battle for human freedom. This task will fail. We in the human rights community support MrOjudu’s current crusade against despots in power in Ekiti State. It is a right step in the right direction. No amount of blackmail should stop MrOjudu because his battle is righteous and just. History will definitely absolve him”, it stressed.

The group said the right violations of Fayose are being documented and would soon be presented to judicial authorities in Nigeria and within the framework of the United Nations.

But Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Communications and New Media, LereOlayinka carpeted Ojudu, describing him as a negative influence on the state.

Olayinka said; “even though I respect Senator Ojudu because of his age, truth must be told; he was responsible for the political instability in the state, which resulted in the state having 10 governors in 16 years, and Ekiti people will not let him (Ojudu) have his way this time around.”

He said: “If Ojudu thinks that the way he used falsehood, propaganda and fake security men to remove Governor Fayose in 2006, he can do same in 2015, he is making a mistake.”

He said apart from waging war against democratically elected governors of the state, Ojudu’s other contribution to the state was the Miss Ekiti Beauty Pageant that he alongside his E-11 people used to indulge young ladies in the state in prostitution.

The governor’s aide said; “It is on record that Ojudu wagged war against OtunbaNiyi Adebayo, using his Tempo and The News Magazines, he did the same against Governor Fayose during his first tenure, using

PM News, despite being among those who urged EngrSegun Oni to contest the governorship and that he played prominent roles in the formation Oni’s campaign organisation, the Ekiti Development Agenda (EDA), Ojudu still wagged war against Oni.

“The only governor he, (Ojudu) did not fight openly was DrKayodeFayemi and it was because of his position as a member of the APC and a senator. Even at that, FayemiOjudu clandestinely wagged war against Fayemi, causing division in the APC with his Action Group caucus.

“The reality is that Ojudu will wage war against anybody just to achieve his personal ambition and this he did immediately Fayemi left government. Ojudu started destroying Fayemi to the extent that he allegedly took a recording of what Fayemi said to Senator Bola Tinubu, and it was on that note that he (Fayemi) almost lost his relationship with Tinubu.

“Leaders of the APC can come to Ekiti to find out why Ojudu is the most hated politician in the state today, with people calling him names like Senator Asemo, Senator Maarie later, etc because he did nothing in terms of developing the Central Senatorial District that he represents. When the Vice President-Elect, Prof YemiOsinbajo came to Ekiti to campaign, Ojudu was not allowed to speak. He was openly booed by members and supporters of the APC. Was Governor Fayose responsible for that as well?”
