Robbers raid Baale, dwellers of a community in Agbado area of Ogun State

Sunday, July 26, 2015, was a day of panic in Aina Town, Dalemo, in the Agbado area of Ogun State, as a gang of robbers invaded the community at about 2am.

It was learnt that the bandits, numbering about six, went on the rampage, unleashing terror on several houses including the residence of the Baale.

PUNCH Metro gathered the gang injured some residents and dispossessed them of their belongings during the operation that lasted for more than an hour.

Our correspondent learnt that the robbers, while trying to escape, opened fire on the Anti-Robbery team attached to the Agbado Police Division, which came to the area after receiving a distress call.

Two of the assailants were reportedly killed in the ensuing gun duel, which lasted for about 30 minutes. Other robbers were said to have escaped with injuries.

A locally-made gun, live and expended cartridges, laptops, mobile phones, jewellery and cash sum of N3,000 were recovered from the dead robbers.

Some residents, who spoke with our correspondent on Monday, likened the attack to “a war film,” adding that they were still living in fear.

A 72-year-old woman, who resides on Shomuyiwa Street, Mrs. Lola Ajayi, said the robbers collected a sum of N33,000 that her family wanted to use to pay the rent. Ajayi, who spoke in Yoruba, said she let go of the money when they threatened to kill her son.

She said. “My husband is a driver and he has kept the money with me for three months now. It was supposed to be paid to our landlady. She has given us ultimatum to pay by the end of this month. The rent is N36,000 per annum. I quickly gave them the money when they wanted to kill my son.”

Another victim, Mrs. Tawa Jolaosho, said, “They collected N62,000, phones and gold jewellery from me. All the 10 rooms in this house were attacked. One of them hit me in the face and beat up my daughter.”

Mrs. Pelumi Atoloye, who deals in recharge cards, said she and her husband lost three phones and vouchers worth N6,000. She added that the police had returned one of the phones to them.

A resident on Bakare Street, Saheed Erinkitola, said he was dispossessed of N95,000 and phones, adding that his wife also sustained a minor injury in the chest.

The Baale, Alhaji Abdulganiy Adegunle, said the assailants held his family at gunpoint while the operation lasted.

“They started the operation around 1.55am, going from one house to another. When I saw that they were heading for my house, I went into hiding. When they entered, they shouted, ‘where is Baale, where is Baale’. They brought me out, collected two phones and money. I had to beg them seriously; they wanted to shoot me. They also robbed all my neighbours. This has never happened in this community before.”

The Ogun State police spokesperson, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the attack to our correspondent. He said the police had launched a manhunt for the fleeing members of the gang.

He said, “The Anti Robbery team of the Ogun State Police Command, attached to Agbado Division on Sunday around 3.30am engaged armed robbers, operating and terrorising residents of the Somuyiwa and Dalemo areas, and arrested two fatally injured suspected robbers with arms and ammunition, while others escaped with bullet wounds. Efforts are on to arrest the fleeing members of the gang.

“A locally-made gun, some live cartridges, expended cartridges, 15 different types of mobile phones, sets of expensive jewellery, laptops and cash sum of N3,000 were recovered from the gang. Residents have been able to identify some of the recovered items as their belongings.”

Adejobi added that the state commissioner of police, Abdulmajid Ali, had directed that the case be transferred to the Department of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence of the command for investigation.
