Truck kills two while crossing road in Dalemo area of Ota, Ogun State

A tipper travelling from Abeokuta to Lagos on Saturday killed two pedestrians while they were crossing the road in the Dalemo area of Ota, Ogun State.

The brake of the tipper was said to have failed before it rammed into the victims, and wounded them in the process.

The Ota Unit Commander, Assistant Corps Commander, Mr. Mathew Olonisaye, said the accident occurred around 3.45pm, and the victims were rescued and rushed to a hospital, where they died.

“The tipper was heading for Lagos from Abeokuta. The brake failed and it rammed into the people who were crossing to the other side of the road at the Dalemo area in Ota.

“The two people ─ males ─ were fatally wounded. They were rushed to the General Hospital, Ota, but they died some hours later in the hospital.”

Olonisaye noted that there was a need for owners of articulated vehicles to ensure the proper maintenance of their vehicles before putting them on the road.

He also warned that the drivers of such vehicles should adhere strictly to a speed limit of 50km per hour.

He said, “The owners of these tippers must ensure their proper maintenance before putting them on the road in order not to endanger other people’s lives. Again, their drivers must maintain 50km per hour speed limit for their kind of vehicles.”

Olonisaye also appealed to pedestrians to observe necessary precautions before crossing the road.

He said, “People should not just dash across the road without observing the necessary precautions. It is dangerous to do so.”
