HELP FOR MOHAMMED MAHAMUD: A SICKLE CELL SUFFERER

Today I am writing about a young man with the medical condition. This is the story of Mohammed Mahamud, a 28-year-old student of the National Open University (NOUN), Mohammed was born with sickle cell anemia (HBSS) which is the strongest form of the disease compared to the other types of the chronic condition.

Mohammed was diagnosed with avascular necrosis of the femoral head which is one of the complications of sickle cell where the bone and tissues in his hip die due to poor  blood supply, because oxygen in sickle blood is lower than people who don't have the medical condition. Because of the low oxygen, it can not travel and pump enough blood to every part of the body, because Mohammed's tissues and bone in his hip didn't get enough blood supply, it dies off.

Mohammed is in serious pains 24 hours a day, when he wakes up in the morning, the first thing he does is to take painkillers and wait for few hours for the painkiller to kick in and alleviate his pain before stepping out of bed.

A lot of times he can not walk on his legs or put pressure on his hip, the avascular necrosis pains has spread to his groin, thigh and buttocks. His Doctors said the only solution for him is to have total replacement of his hips where the damage bone and tissues are removed completely and replaced with metal.

Because he is studying and in pain most of the times, he cannot work to support himself, his mother is a petty trader and his father is a taxi driver, and they have spent months trying to raise the money for the surgery which his doctor said will cost N800,000 (Eight hundred thousand naira) just for the operation but they could not raise such huge amount. His after care, medication, feeding and transportation from Kwara where he reside to Igbobi hospital in Lagos is not included.

His case came to my attention through a friend, Abisola Oladapo, a London based sickle cell advocate. At this moment, getting  his story out to the world on my Blog is his last option to try and raise the money and get donations from good samaritans in Nigeria and abroad. Mohammed has already lost his sister Hajarat to sickle cell and him and his family are really scared that if he doesn't get the help he needed, things might go from bad to worst. The faith of Mohammed is hanging and he needs the money as soon as possible, please I am begging everybody to please, help put an end to his agony and non stop pain.
