What has been happening to your business in the last one year?

We have been working and helping people take care of their skin. And I also got an award as the Best Skin Care Beauty Therapist in Nigeria late last year. The award was presented by Senator Ita Giwa, at the Glam and Essence Award. We have discovered new treatments for a lot of skin problems.

As a certified skin specialist, how have you been coping with the issue of the large number of people who are now in the business and also the issue of fake products in the market?

It is very embarrassing that once people discover a business is bringing money, everyone rushes into it for money without a proper knowledge of the business and not because they are professionals in the field. At the end of the day, they end up endangering lives of people. I have people who come to me and say  that they got ‘Egypitian Milk’ and it destroyed their skin. On further questioning, I get to know they bought the fake of the product. I have franchise for selling the Egyptian Milk so I wonder where they get what they claim they bought from. People also patronize those who claim they are skin experts but their skins tell a different story; they don’t look good.

What new product have you come up with?

Like I have always said, we only stuck products for skin issues like stretch mark, pimples, acne, toning, smoothening and several skin issues. Except a new type of skin issue comes up. What we do is keep working on new products to tackle the usual skin problems.

What is the difference between toning and bleaching?

Bleaching is going to the extreme, that is changing your skin from being black to white. Toning can be likened to a situation  whereby a dark person that has been under the sun or a sunny environment, gets her skin burnt and wants to renew the skin and make it fresh.  This is like taking care of the Melasma on the skin. A dark person can do this. But bleaching is completely changing the colour of the skin from dark to white.

Nowadays, a large number of women employ the services of skin experts and reports say the market is huge in Nigeria. What is your opinion?

Not only in Nigeria, all over the world, beauty business and skin treatment is serious business. Everyone wants to look good. However, there is a skin care product called Obagi. It has a high percentage of Hydrocrenol, it is a product for people with serious acne and pimples. It is not a Nigerian product but it is sold all over the world. After use, the product lightens the skin.

Are there herbal products women can use as alternative to the creams?

Most of the skin care products I stock in my shops are herbal. One can actually get light using herbal products. Lemon for example can make one lighter if used to scrub the skin, Pawpaw blended with raw coffee and used to rub the skin will make a woman fair. There is also Turmeric, used in India to lighten the skin.

What have you done to avoid people mistaking your products for fake ones?

Basically what I have done is to put a seal on it to indicate the products are from our store. We also offer free consultation to clients on their skin. A lot of people use anything they find in the market but they are not aware that what will work for A will not work for B. People who live abroad have gone to dermatologist, and what they prescribed for them didn’t work. They have come to me and I helped them solve their skin problems. Not everything has to do with lightening of the skin.

Are there remedies for people who have over bleached their skin or burnt their skin in the process of using wrong skin care products?

There are remedies. Lightening the skin at one point turns to an addiction. When a woman looks at the mirror today and the next day she feels she is not looking like she looked, she will want to continue lightening her skin. This makes it turn to an addiction. Once a woman gets the required complexion that she needs, the best thing is to stop and use a good moisturizer or even ori (shear butter), Coconut oil and use the lightening cream like 3 times a week to maintain the complexion she has achieved. But some people are not aware of this. They keep using and using the lightening cream. This damages their skin.  They are not aware that they need to slow down. And when their skin gets burnt, they feel what they use didn’t work and they will start with another product thereby damaging their skin completely. To the extent that their neck is rumpled and burnt. And they wont think of repairing their skin. The way out for women in this category is to stop the use of lightening cream, buy shear butter or coconut oil and administer on their skin for at least 5 months. They should take vitamins daily and fish oil. And if they can afford glutathione pills, they should take to rebuild their skin. That is the only way to get their skin back. The skin recycles itself. So if there is nothing to be recycled and they keep using junks, all that leads to skin cancer.

Does this popular product , Caro White work?

I think Caro White is effective. It lightens the skin. But that is if they use the product alone without adding anything. I think it contains some percentage of hydrocrenol which lightens the skin.

How do you balance your business and your home?

I take a day off work once a week to make sure everything we need is at home. Sundays are for me and my husband. We are together throughout that day.
