GOVERNOR NARROWLY ESCAPES DEATH 24 HOURS TO HIS 50th BIRTHDAY

Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State and his deputy, Chief Steven Lawani, yesterday, escaped death by whiskers on the Makurdi-Gboko highway yesterday when his convoy was involved in an accident. The incident, which happened at about 11:20 am at Angbaaye village on the outskirts of Makurdi less than 24 hours to the governor’s 50th birthday expected to be celebrated in grand style, left at least seven people injured. According to reports, the driver of a station wagon car, which was conveying passengers to Makurdi, was on top speed and wanted to overtake some vehicles but on realising that it was too late to slow down, rammed into the governor’s convoy coming in the opposite direction. The jeep in which the governor was travelling was badly damaged while the back-up jeep skidded off the road into the bush but the occupants escaped unhurt. Governor Suswam thereafter alighted and directed two of his pilot vehicles to immediately evacuate the injured to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi for treatment.
