The Eucharist is a sacrament and a sacrifice under the appearances of bread and wine when the Lord is contained, offered, and received. In the Anglican Communion, The Eucharist stands as the heart of the life and mission of the Church. It’s then a standard practice that The Eucharist is served during the Holy Communion Service.
On Christmas day, 25th December 2014, St. Matthew’s Anglican Church in highbrow Maitama, Abuja hosted President Goodluck Jonathan, his wife Dame Patience Jonathan, the president’s motherMadam Eunice Aye Jonathan, and some members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC). The celebrant of the Communion service was the Head of the Anglican Church of Nigeria, Primate Nicholas Okoh.
President Jonathan and his family were seated in the front pew with fellow Anglicans Oloye Jumoke Akinjide(Minister of State for the FCT), and Prof. Jerry Gana(former Minister of Information). Jonathan and his wife assisted in the Communion as they carried The Eucharist which was received byPrimate Nicholas Okoh at the altar.
Another prominent clergyman in the procession was the Chaplain of the Villa Chapel, Ven. Obioma Onwuzurumba. Dame Patience Jonathan read the first lesson drawn from Isaiah 9: 2, 6 and 7, while the President took the second reading from Hebrews 1:1-12. Primate Nicholas Okoh delivered the sermon titled “The Jewish Messianic Expectations and 2015 Elections”. It is noteworthy that St. Matthew’s Maitama is another church with a long list of eminent personalities as members.
