The assistant head, Odionwere of Arougba community in Edo State, Pa Goodluck Uwumahongie was on Monday killed by unknown gunmen who beheaded him and went away with his head.Going by reports, the community leader was shot by the assailants before they decapitated his head from his neck. Uwumahongie’s name featured prominently in the communal crisis that engulfed Arougba community in November last year over a land tussle that claimed three lives, hence the belief by his wife that he was killed over his stance on land matter in the community.
Recounting the tragic incident, the late Uwumahongie’s wife, Julie, said her husband was killed at her parents’ house in neighbouring Irhirhi, where he had relocated, following the crisis that broke out in Arougba last year. Julie, 55, said she was informed about her husband’s death at about 5:30 p.m. on Monday. In her words, “One Osamwonyi had earlier threatened to kill my husband before the crisis. After we ran away from the village during the crisis to seek refuge at my father’s place at Irhirhi, Osamwonyi saw him there and said he would still kill him.”
