#Nigeria: Pressure Mounts To Postpone February 2015 Elections

There are growing calls for Independent National Electoral Commision(INEC) to postpone the forthcoming presidential, governorship, and National Assembly elections which have been scheduled for 14th and 28th February 2015. Making this disclosure, serving APC federal lawmaker Senator Bukola Saraki tweeted earlier today that,”National Security Adviser(NSA) seeking to postpone election shows clearly, security report has gotten to Aso Rock that GEJ can’t win. We must ALL reject postponement. Any attempt to cancel the election is an attempt to rob @ThisIsBuhari @ProfOsinbajo and Nigerians of what appears to be an apparent victory”.
Col. Sambo Dasuki(retd.)is the current National Security Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan. According to reports, Dasuki is calling for a postponement so Nigerians can get their PVCs. Reacting to this, Governor Wamakko of Sokoto State has said,”Those calling for the postponement of the elections are not patriotic. They don’t want want Nigeria’s progress and must be rejected”, while House of Reps. speaker Hon. Aminu Tambuwal is of the view that, “Anyone not ready for poll should go and get ready. No postponement.”
This call to postpone the general elections is coming a few days after the Adamawa State governor, James Bala Ngilari, had on Tuesday, 20th January 2015 called for the postponement of the governorship election in the state. According to Ngilari,”In Adamawa, I can truly tell you that seven Local Government areas are under siege. The supposed peace we have is just the peace of the graveyard. To say that the security situation in these local governments are sufficiently stabilized so that we can have these elections on the 14th of February 2014, to my mind, is a farce.”
