Broda mi, I am at a loss for words here. Never for once in my existence have I ever imagined having to write a tribute to you in death before your nineties, just like our Father. But today, I write with grief in my heart, yet with thanksgiving for a life that was well spent. Growing up, I remember with great fondness how all my friends ultimately became “aburos” to you. They all call you brother, not uncle. You are not just a brother to me; you are my friend, confidant and mentor. You are the friend who understood me well, respected my decisions, supported my passion and brought me back down to earth every time I started to drift. You were closer to me than even friends and were always available with a relevant word of advice. We spent times and seasons together. Our wives were fond of teasing us when either of us was not around. You amazed me, after meeting Kemi the first time, by predicting that we will be married in a year, while giving a toast at my birthday celebration. Exactly a year after that (exact to the date), we got married. That was how deeply connected you were to us.
For me, you exemplified the passion one must attach to one’s work, having served your nation meritoriously. Your demise is a great loss to the family, Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole. I am consoled today that you lived a life worthy of emulation and you left legacies your children will attain to and surpass. I am consoled that I have shared more than 50 years of memories with you. Thank you for being my brother and friend. Your friendship was much more than I could have ever imagined or hoped for. I know you are resting in the bosom of your maker. You have fought the good fight. “He anointed your head with oil, and your cup runneth over”. May you rest in perfect peace. See you in the stars, Your Excellency.
