The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arraigned a couple, Mr. Nwabueze Nwabueze and Mrs. Bridget Nwabueze, and one Ngozi Orji before Justice H. A. Nganjiwa of the Federal High Court, Rivers State.
The trio was arraigned on seven counts bordering on obtaining by false pretences and conspiracy over N8.6m.
PUNCH Metro had reported last week that the defendants were arrested for defrauding one Austin Emuan of the Gothic-Len Consortium Limited.
The defendants were arraigned on Monday.
The charges read in part, ‘That you, Nwabueze Nwabueze, alias Ezeugo 1; Bridget Nwabueze, alias Juliet; Ngozi Orji, alias Ben Azua, and others now at large, between September 2011 and March 2013, at Port Harcourt, within the jurisdiction of this court, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit; obtaining money by false pretences and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 8(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act”.
The accused persons pleaded not guilty.
Nganjiwa ordered the first and the third accused persons to be remanded in custody pending their bail application. The second accused was tentatively released to take care of her baby. The case was adjourned till March 30, 2015.
