Nnwoka Daniel, a Rivers State-based politician, performer and preacher has condemned the massacre and laid to bare the mayhem caused by unknown gunmen who struck at the APC gubernatorial rally at Okrika in Rivers State yesterday. Daniel tweeting at @deehumorous tweeted this morning that: “So we set out for Okrika yesterday, got into the town about past 10am via boat..Crowd was gathering, musicians warming them up. We had a part of the programme we call “ward rounds” where we involve the various wards in a dance-off, plus local talent-sourcing. While we were still rocking with the home-grown talents, there came the first explosion which was close to the stage.
“Some said it was knockout, electrical spark… The Police EOD unit came to gather the materials and we moved on. Not long after, 2 loud bangs landed on one of the school roofs and perforated the roof and ceiling. Crowd panicked and took off. The police did some sweeping..EOD came again with their sniffer dogs..Stage and VIP area were cleared. We received the all-clear again from the security and we continued with the music whilst the attendees mostly locals regrouped.
“Shortly after, Dr.DAP (Dakuku Peterside) arrived and the rally proper had to begin. We started with the opening prayer, national anthem, welcome remarks. Then the 1st Solidarity Speech from the Party Chair in LGA, Commissioner for Information and Party Leader was up next. I should add here that no so-called inciting statement was made, nobody insulted anybody. All they said was Okrika is APC. The Commissioner for Information even went on her knees to pray for peace in Okrika and for the children of Okrika and their future.
“Just when the Party Leader in Okrika took the mic, shots were fired from the right side of the stage, I took cover. It was like the shots were a signal that it was TIME because after the shots, multiple shots began to fly in from all angles. There was a stampede at the VIP canopy area. I and my guys jumped into the cemetery opposite the venue to take cover. Only for the crowd in front of us reversing that the boys were still pursuing from that angle and we jumped out of the cemetery.
“We came out and joined the crowd to scamper to the Ogoloma axis. Again the boys were advancing from there as well. We faced a place called Fiberesima Foundation. The boys were also advancing from there. We tried to advance to St.Peters Church. As I was about to face another part of town, thankfully I saw a car that had space for us and we jumped in. Even to drive out of town was some war… These guys covered everywhere including the Abam axis of Okrika.
“In all of these though, the security officers were at their all-time sharp, repelling these gunmen else it would have been worse. The men of DSS, C4I,ATF, Police Special Forces, Mopol and the Okrika divisional police must be commended for doing their best. My heart goes out to the Police Corporal who lost his life. I saw him being moved into an ambulance, a sorry sight it was.
“I pray for speedy recovery on those who got injured either from the stampede of bullets – the pressman and policemen. To those whose properties were looted; those who got jacked and beaten – God will console you. To my friend and brother whose Range Rover was set on fire, those guys just invited the fire of God on themselves. To my friend Peremo who owns the sound system that was looted and your service truck set on fire, God will give you double for your trouble.
“To all those in pain, God will take away the pain and comfort you. For Dr. DAP and all APC Rivers supporters, the Lord will fight our battle and we shall hold our peace. To Dr. DAP and APC supporters, stand still and know that He is God – the battle isn’t ours to fight. I can see God fighting our battles. He will do what he said he would do.#God is on the Throne #LightOverDarkness #DAP #Success #APC #GreaterTogether. I’m done..Oh lest I forget..Many people hid APC supporters in their homes and offered them clothes in place of their APC uniforms.”
