The Senators of the All Progressives Congress (APC) , at a press conference in the senate, on Thursday, said that a fresh plot to sack the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, is in the offing.According to the lawmakers, “reliable sources” had alerted them that the Head of Service might soon direct Jega to proceed on pre-retirement leave next week. Addressing newsmen, the Senate Minority Leader, Senator George Akume said: “We have received information from a very credible source that next week, the chairman of INEC will be given a letter from the office of the Head of the Civil Service directing him to proceed on terminal leave.”
According to Akume, the Federal Government was trying to use a circular from the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation dated August 11, 2010 to place Jega on compulsory pre-retirement leave. “Whether the letter emanate from the HOS office or the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, it does not make sense. Even if we go by the terms of the civil service circular of August 11, 2010, it is not applicable whatsoever to the INEC chairman.
Akume claimed that the circular, with reference number HCSF/CMO/1772/TI/11, was talking about clarifications on pre-retirement leave, which according to him, is only applicable to tenured officers who are career civil servants. He claimed that Jega might have offended some forces because of his plans to conduct a free and fair election.

Meanwhile, the presidency on Thursday, rejected the allegation made by APC senators that the Federal Government was poised to serve Professor Jega notice to proceed on terminal leave from next week. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr Doyin Okupe, said: “There is no truth in it. It’s just a figment of their imagination. We want a credible election but in a situation where we are being informed that because the postponement of the election attracted no reaction from the people, Jega could be removed and a planless person who will do the bidding of the government, doesn’t hold water.”
