For me nothing is more heartbreaking than watching your loved ones endure extreme pains and life-threatening medical conditions. The sickle cell sufferers endure not only the pain itself but also the stress of not knowing when a sickle cell crisis will occur. They also have to struggle with lost time and social isolation at school and work, as well as fear of death.
A friend of mine, Abisola Oladapo who is also a sickle cell sufferer believes that individuals with sickle cell disease have the right to quality care. And she is embarking on a worldwide outreach on behalf of herself and other sickle cell sufferers in Africa as she seeks help from pharmaceutical companies who can donate free medications for sickle cell sufferers and financial supports from a wide range of individuals and organisations to create more awareness and enlightenment programmes and also raise fund for medications and treatments of sickle cell patients who cannot access basic health care facilities in the days of crises.
By joining together, we can all turn a sickle into a smile!
