Why Awujale And Late Bayo Kuku Didn’t See Eye-To-Eye + How The Late Ijebu Bizman Was Buried

Until he died at 84 on Thursday 5th of March, 2015, very many Nigerians didn’t know that prominent Ijebu High Chief, Bayo Kuku had been ill for about 5 years. Out of respect, the media didn’t write about it and Ijebu people kept mum.  Also, only very few people knew that this respected Nigerian who was the Ogbeni Oja of Ijebu-Ode was not on talking terms with his age long friend, brother and royal father, the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona. That they were not on good terms showed at Bayo Kuku’s burial last Friday in Ijebu Ode when he was interred at his palatial Ijebu home. Many had expected that the Kabiyesi would send his staff of office and a high-powered delegation of Ijebu Obas but none of that happened. All the 60 Ijebu Obas who are fiercely loyal to the Awujale were absent and only a few (about 5) sent their staff of office as many were scared of how the Awujale will view the sending of their staff of office. The 4 kings who sent their staff of office were Ogiri Madagbo, Aladeken, Onilugun and Ajalorun.

How The Feud Started

For many years, the Awujale of Ijebu land and Chief Bayo kuku were best of friends, they were known as Ore Timo Timo which literally means Confidants.  Chief Bayo Kuku was Awujale’s backbone before the crisis about 5 years ago, he had the largest donations and contributions in the palace. He allegedly bought cars and supported the Palace massively. This was why Awujale gave him the chieftaincy title of Ogbeni Oja Of Ijebuland.  Four years ago, Awujale’s late brother, Supo who was a lawyer was said to have called Chief Kuku to help resolve the crises between him, Awujale and his other siblings, in other for them to resolve the issue over their mother’s property which was deteriorating all over the town. Awujale was said to have asked the late Bayo kuku not to intervene, but because of his love for the family he was making effort to bring theAwujale family together, which reportedly led to a huge war between the one time best friends and since then, Awujale parted ways with Bayo Kuku, before he got ill a few years ago which automatically put their family crises to rest.

Many dignitaries intervened which also ended up becoming a fight with Awujale including Chief Chris Ogunbanjo who was Bayo Kuku’s in-law. Last year, when Awujale’s brother Supo died, he was buried in Lagos instead of Ijebu-Ode allegedly due to the crises in the family.
