Aisha Jummai Al-Hassan in early lead, set to become Nigeria’s first female governor

Senator Aisha Jummai Al-Hassan is on the verge of making history by becoming the first Nigerian woman to be elected a State Governor.

Reports from Taraba State say Jummai, the first female governorship candidate from the entire northern part of the country, is still leading in the local governments announced.  She ran on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Aisha Jummai Al-Hassan was elected Senator for the Taraba North constituency of Taraba State in the April 2011 Federal elections. She ran on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform but later defected to APC.

Though INEC is yet to officially announce her winner, Nigerians are already celebrating Aisha Jummai Al-Hassan’s feat on social media.

However Aisha Jummai Al-Hassan has alleged that the REC in Taraba was paid one billion naira to rig the elections in favor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“They are holding on to the results from Southern Taraba with intensions to to influence the results in favour of the PDP,” the source revealed in a telephone conversation.

The source noted that the party had constrain reaching its agents. “We can not reach our agents because mobile phones are not working in many of the villages in Southern Taraba. We have been unable to contact party agents to know what is happening there.

“We are waiting at the INEC office but officials are yet to confirm if they have received the results. They are working to ensure that our candidate does not win but we will stand by our vote,” the source said.
