Senator Ahmed Yerima is a former 2-term governor of Zamfara State – he was first elected in 1999, and re-elected in 2003 for a second term which ended on 29 May 2007. He then joined the senatorial race in 2007 on the platform of All Nigeria People’s Party(ANPP) and emerged senator representing Zamfara West at the 6th Senate. He was Senate Majority Whip in the 6th Senate. In 2011, he was re-elected for a 2nd term on ANPP platform. At the recently-held senatorial election, Yerima won a 3rd term but this time with an APC ticket.
Right now, the jostle for Senate leader position among senators-elect from the North West zone has begun. With the All Progressives Congress (APC) zoning arrangement for principal officers in the National Assembly, some ranking senators like Bala Ibn Na’Allah from Kebbi State, Ahmed Yerima from Zamfara State and Kabiru Gaya from Kano State are said to be in contention for the position of Senate Leader.
