Power Generation: Agency Tasks Electricity Companies On Alternatives

The Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Commission, Dr Sam Amadi, has appealed to generating and distribution companies in the power sector to invest in coal, solar and other sources of power to save Nigeria from epileptic electricity supply.

Dr Amadi made the appeal in a session with the media in Abuja, after a meeting with electricity consumer advocacy groups on how to improve the quality of consumers’ participation in decision making processes in the sector.

According to the chairman, the forum was aimed at amplifying the voice of consumers as other stakeholders take critical decisions regarding electricity generation, distribution and billing.

With a population of over 150 million, the nation is generating below 6,000 megawatts of electricity, which is far below the needed capacity.

The low supply had been attributed to pipeline vandalism.

To open up the sector for more investments, the Nigerian government unbundled its stakes in the Power Holding Company of Nigeria in a process that was described as the most transparent in the African continent.

The incoming administration of the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, had during their campaign promised to tackled the power crisis and increase the megawatts to over 20,000.
