The Benue State House of Assembly complex was yesterday shut down over intensive plot by the lawmakers to impeach the speaker, Terhile Ayua and Governor Gabriel Suswam.
The lawmakers, including members of All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had held an emergency session on Wednesday to collect signatures so as to impeach the speaker.
The action of the Assembly members was hinged on the speaker’s alleged inability to defend their welfare before the executive arm of government hence they are being owed salaries, while the speaker also allegedly connived with the governor, without the consent of members to approve and assent to the bills for revenue administration and chieftaincy appointment.
Pandemonium As Suswam Deposes Benue Monarch
There was pandemonium in major towns of Benue State yesterday when Governor Gabriel Suswam announced the deposition of a prominent traditional ruler, the Ter Nagi, Chief Daniel Ayua Abomtse and appointed a new chief to quickly take over.
Abomtse’s removal was contained in a letter signed by the special adviser to the governor on local government and chieftaincy affairs, Prince Solomon Wombo, who stated that the traditional ruler was removed over acts of gross misconduct and embarrassment to the Tiv Area Traditional Council.
The deposed chief, Abomtse was the press secretary to the Tor Tiv, Chief Akawe Torkula for several years before he was appointed the Ter Nagi II.
Sources in the Assembly said the speaker, Ayua had directed the clerk and security operatives in the assembly to shut the complex. The mace was also reportedly carted away.
