Controversy Trails Plans To Impeach Shema

Controversy has continued to trail alleged plans to impeach the Katsina State governor Ibrahim Shema with parties singing discordant tunes.

The spokesman of 15 APC members at the state Assembly, Danlami Kurfi (APC, House Kurfi) had on Tuesday told newsmen that the lawmakers had concluded plans to impeach the governor and serve him with an impeachment notice over poor handling of state finances along other impeachable offences.

He specifically said the governor would be served an impeachment notice when the state assembly resumes sitting next week Monday.

However, in a statement made available to LEADERSHIP, the Minority Leader of Katsina state Assembly, Abdullahi Mahuta said no such plans existed, noting “the alleged plan by the 15 APC members to impeach Governor Shema is false and untrue in its entirety”.

Mahuta said: “The 15 APC members had never sat and discussed the said impeachment plot at any time. As such, such a plan remains, at best, the respected personal opinion of Hon. Danlami Kurfi”

He admitted that the administration of Governor Shema was not without blemish, noting that what the state needed was a conducive atmosphere for a peaceful transition.

He noted that the good people of Katsina State “had impeached’ Governor Shema and, indeed, the entire PDP structures in the state during the just concluded general elections.”

But in a swift reaction, the spokesman of 15 APC members in the state assembly insisted that the group was perfecting plans to serve the governor an impeachment notice.

“If the minority leader is not part of it, its fine as he is entitled to his opinion but I can tell you that there is such plans and we will serve the notice by Monday”.

When our correspondent contacted the Katsina state commissioner for information, Hussaini Garba Yanmama, he denied knowledge of the plan saying that “I only read it in the media”.

The NLC chairman, Tanimu Lawal Saulawa, said he needed time to study true state of situation before making any comment.

Similarly, the spokesman of Katsina state PDP, Salisu Sukuntuni declined to comment on the matter, saying he was going though newspaper to read the reports.

He pledged to call back after reading media reports on the   mater but never did at press time.
