Leaders of the South East delegation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday made a special request to the president-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, to consider the region for the position of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation while choosing members of his cabinet.
They made this appeal during a congratulatory visit to the president-elect at his Defence House residence in Abuja yesterday.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Imo State governor and chairman of Progressive Governors’ Forum, Rochas Okorocha, said although the region could not be delivered to Buhari in the presidential election, they were able to cut down over 7.2million votes the PDP had projected to get from the region.
“We (South East APC) are more victorious than you are on your victory at the presidential election; many of us would have gone on exile if you had lost”, he said.
While expressing hope that Buhari’s government will be successful and also support the cause of the South East, Okorocha appealed that the region should be considered for the position of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
He added that the South East region has also unanimously agreed that the former national chairman of ANPP, Ogbonnaya Onu, should be elevated and recognised as the leader of the party in the South East.
In his remark, Ogbonnaya Onu said that Buhari’s victory has brought respite to the entire nation.
Responding, the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari thanked the South East APC for the role it played in reducing the deficit of votes the PDP gathered in the region in the last election, and assured that his government will carry everyone along irrespective of region and tribe.
