The Lagos State Government on Wednesday said it would fulfil promises made by a former Governor of the state, Bola Tinubu, to a former correspondent of Radio Nigeria and the defunct Daily Times, Mr. Wole Falodun.
The government added that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, had also directed that Falodun be invited for a discussion.
PUNCH Metro had on July 22, 2015, reported the plight of Falodun, who was the writer of a popular column, Waka About, in the defunct Lagos Weekend in the 1970s.
He went blind after a surgeon in the Lagos Island General Hospital made a mistake while treating him (Falodun) for glaucoma in 1995.
Falodun had written an appeal letter to the then Lagos State Governor, Tinubu, on May 21, 2001, and was invited on February 19, 2002, for a meeting with the governor.
Tinubu had reportedly promised that the state would take care of the veteran solely on humanitarian grounds.
Tinubu added that the government would not accept liability arising from the negligence of the doctor, but would assist financially with Falodun’s upkeep and the education of his three children through the “state scholarship board and other convenient options”.
Our correspondent reported that the Waka About columnist, however, had yet to enjoy any of the government promises.
The Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello, in a statement sent to our correspondent on Wednesday, however, said the state would immediately take charge and “ensure that all promises are fulfilled”.
Bello said, “The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has directed the Secretary to the State Government to immediately take charge and ensure that all promises made must be fulfilled.
“According to the Governor, the Secretary to the State Government is to establish contact with Mr. Wole Falodun and collect details of promises made by his predecessors in office and ensure that they are forwarded to him for immediate action. The governor said the promises were not personal, but made on behalf of the State Government.”
Bello, who noted that the move was a demonstration of Ambode’s commitment to the plight of Lagosians, added that Falodun’s family members and the office of the Secretary to the State Government would meet to implement the governor’s directive.
