A resident of Rainbow Street, Adele, in the Ijanikin area of Lagos State, Mr. Joel Nwaosuagwu, has accused the Chairman of the landlord association in the area, Chief Nzenagu Ikegburugburu, of assaulting his family and vandalising his property.
Nwaosuagwu claimed that the 71-year-old chairman led two of his children, who were reportedly armed with sticks and cutlasses to his house and unleashed terror on the family.
The resident said the attackers cut Nwaosuagwu with cutlass in the arm, while his wife, Victoria, and daughter, Ngozi, were beaten up. The gate and window glasses of the house were reportedly destroyed.
Victoria, who sustained injuries in the eyes and in the back, was reportedly admitted at a hospital in Ketu.
Our correspondent was told that the two families had been friends until three years ago when a disagreement over a parcel of land severed their relationship.
PUNCH Metro noted that the farmland was located at the back of Nwaosuagwu’s residence on the street.
It was learnt that the chairman and some other elders of the community had met with Nwaosuagwu to vacate the spot to create more space for vehicular movement.
Speaking with our correspondent, the 60-year-old resident said Ikegburugburu connived with some land grabbers to deny him of his means of his livelihood.
He said, “I have been farming on this land for eight years now. Just about three years ago, the chairman and some land grabbers started this problem, telling me to stop farming on my land. The space after the farm is enough for cars to pass without hindrance. He sent some people to destroy some plants in the farm on Saturday.”
“On Sunday, he and his two sons stormed my house at 9am and beat me and my family up. One of his sons stabbed me in the arm. They broke the gate and glasses of my house and injured my wife. She had to be admitted in the hospital for three days. We reported to the police at the Ijanikin Police Station and they promised to intervene.”
However, the chairman, who spoke with our correspondent on the phone, denied the attack. He said he and his wife were returning from church on the fateful day, when Nwaosuagwu’s family and some thugs laid ambush for their car.
He added that Nwaosuagwu and his family injured themselves by accident.
He said, “My wife and I went to church at 5.45am that day. We were returning at about 9am when Nwaosuagwu, his wife, their daughter and five hoodlums waylaid us. Ngozi poured water mixed with some substance on me and I could not see again. It was while Victoria was fighting that she injured herself. By the time my children came, they had run away.
“I am 71 years old and a gentleman. The hoodlums he hired to attack me and my wife were the ones that destroyed his house to implicate me. They broke the bone of my arm. I was taken to the community health centre and later referred to a hospital in Badagry. They attempted to kill me.
“The Ijanikin Police Station and some landlords have intervened and told Joel (Nwaosuagwu) to beg me. But Instead of Joel (Nwaosuagwu) to come and beg me with a better bottle of wine, he is provoking me again. If I take him up, let no body beg me.”
Speaking on the farm, Ikegburugburu said a task force of the landlord association wanted to pave the way for vehicular movement.
“We landlords have talked to Joel to stop planting on the portion several times, but he refused. It was the association that sent its task force officials to remove the plants, not me,” he said.
A resident of the area, who did not want his name in print, confirmed to our correspondent that Nwaosuagwu and his family were attacked. He, however, did not mention the culprits.
Former Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Kenneth Nwosu said the matter was not reported to the police.
He said, “The Ijanikin Police Station does not have such a case in its record.”
