Despite assurances by the Federal Government that all civil servants would receive their salaries before the close of work on Thursday, investigations have shown that many of them have yet to be paid on Saturday afternoon.
It was learnt that while the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation had approved the release of monies to banks for payment of salaries since Tuesday, some banks had yet to credit the salary accounts of some government workers.
While government workers who had their salary accounts domiciled in banks like First Bank, United Bank for Africa and Guaranty Trust Bank had confirmed receiving their salaries, findings revealed that those who had accounts with Ecobank had not received their salaries.
Findings by our correspondent further showed that some of these workers whose accounts had been credited could not make any withdrawal owing to hitches associated with their Bank Verification Number.
A civil servant who simply gave her name as Ruth told our correspondent that she had been having problems making withdrawals since Friday that her salary account was credited.
Ruth who said she had already done her BVN registration two months go in one of the First Bank branches located in Abuja told our correspondent that she took the BVN number given to her at First Bank to Union Bank for linking to her salary account.
“I have tried other means like transfer to see if I can get the money out but all to no avail. Banks don’t work on Saturdays and so there is nothing I can do till Monday because my money is trapped.”
Another worker who gave his name as Stephen said while some of his colleagues who have their salary accounts in the United Bank for Africa and Guaranty Trust Bank have received their bank alerts.
Stephen,a senior officer in the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, said, “Some of my colleagues told me at the close of work yesterday that they have received alert from their bank that their salaries had been paid, I have asked some few others who use the EcoBank like me if they have been paid and they said no.”
It was also gathered that the revenue shortfall currently being experienced by government is making it difficult for the revenue generating agencies to meet up with their targets.
