Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate Court
The police have arraigned an apprentice,
Ebuka Chikezie (24), and a driver, Nkemjika Ajunoma (32), before an
Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing electronic
gadgets estimated at N7.4m.
The incident happened at Ebute Meta area of Lagos State.
The police said the two men conspired to
loot their employer’s warehouse and stole 47 drums of dryers, 30 packs
of 4EQ Silfox, 50 cartons of copper pipe, 30 cartons of makiel, 20
cartons of 2HP Compressor, in addition to a cash sum of N200, 000.
It was learnt that their employer, Mr.
Emeka Udonye, who deals majorly in air conditioners and has a warehouse
in Ebute Meta, had met the warehouse opened on the fateful day.
He was said to have thought the place was
burgled, and was about raising the alarm when he was informed by
residents that his apprentice and driver had allegedly taken the items
away.
The police at the Denton Police Division were said to have been alerted.
After the suspects were arrested, the
matter was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department at
Yaba, for prosecution.
They were subsequently arraigned on two counts of stealing.
The charge reads in part, “That you,
Ebuka Chikezie, Nkemjika Ajunoma, on June 1, 2014 at Ebute Meta, Lagos
in the Lagos Magisterial District, being in the employment of one Mr.
Emeka Udonye, did steal 47 drums of dryers valued N3.6m; 30 packs of 4EQ
Silfox valued N1,870, 000; 50 cartons of copper pipe valued N1.3m; 30
cartons of ¾ makiel vaued N1.2m; 20 cartons of 2HP compressor valued
N300,000 and a cash sum of N200,000; all totaled N7.4m, property of your
employer.”
The police prosecutor, Corporal Cyriacus
Osuji, said the offence was punishable under sections 409 and 285 of the
Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.
The defence counsel, Spurgeon Ataene, asked for their bail in liberal terms.
The Chief Magistrate, Y.J. Badejo-Okusanya, admitted them to bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties each in like sum.
She added, “The sureties must be gainfully employed, with evidence of tax clearance and their addresses verified by the police.”
The matter was adjourned till July 28, 2014.
