Detectives of the Ogun State Police Command have said the 21-year-old student, Tolani Ajayi, who killed his father, chopped the body to parts, before dumping the remains in a bush inside the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) camp in Ogun State, is a drug addict.
According to reports, the suspect, who is currently being investigated at the Ogun State Police Command at Eleweran, told interrogators that he has been battling drug addiction which his late father, Charles Ajayi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) had reportedly questioned.
It was while being questioned that the infuriated Tolani responded by stabbing his father with a knife, chopped his body into parts, packed them in a box and dumped it in a bush.
According to the Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi: “Yes, the guy said he takes drugs and that he has been having problems with the school over drug related issues.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor, Redeemer’s University, Prof. Debo Adeyemo, on Monday said the student of the university who murdered his father was facing the institution’s Disciplinary Committee before the incident.
It was also reported that Ajayi told the police that his action was prompted by his late father who he said slapped him for not responding to all the prayer points he (the deceased) was raising.
Commenting on the incident, Adeyemo told journalists that the student had been facing the disciplinary committee before he committed the murder. His offences, however, were not revealed to the press “to avoid compounding the grief of the affected family.”
The VC also maintained that the school had a good reputation for discipline and academic excellence, adding that the incident could have happened in any institution in the world irrespective of their pedigree.
“We have committees who counsel and discipline erring students. We do not hesitate to take the necessary actions against any student found wanting after verifications. We also partner with organisations who help in rehabilitating those that are on drugs. A lot of them have been rehabilitated and become better persons in the society. I can tell you the youmg man has been under disciplinary committee before the incident but we cannot reveal his allegations for now for the sake of the family who are in pains.
“As part of our efforts, a programme, ‘Parenting of life’ was held last month to sensitise parents on to the best way to raise children. We train our students for a total personality in terms of humility and spirituality.
“Thirty per cent of the staff contribute regularly to assist students that are financially challenged,” the VC said.
He then cautioned the media to be more investigative in their reporting as the school authority was not contacted before the news broke.
“We frown on the way the media went into publication without verification from the school. It was by chance that the incident happened on campus. If the father does not have a house here, it would have happened outside the school because the school is on holiday,” he said.
