Following the fallout between the Imo State Governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha and Charly boy during the latter’s father, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa’s funeral service, the governor has opened up on what went wrong at the event. This was contained in 1-page newspaper ‘Press Release’ signed by the Governor’s Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo.
The statement reads in part that,” There have been claims and counter-claims over the ugly incident that took place during the burial service of the late retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oguta , on Friday, June 27, 2014. At the burial service, Mr Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa a.k.a Charly Boy insisted that his home governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha would not talk as protocol and common sense had demanded.
“To say the least, Chukwuemeka Oputa a.k.a Charly Boy, by virtue of what he did at the burial service of the late father obviously acted out an ill-motivated script drafted by some politicians from the state, based in Abuja who have sworn to disturb the peace of their state (Imo), and invariably the peace of the good people and government of the state. In our initial reaction to that absurdity, we simply took exception to the ugly incident that happened in the church, which we also considered disturbing to the spirit of the late Justice. And that was an action that would have been avoided, no matter the temptation.
“First and foremost, you ask yourself one simple question; before the funeral service on that day, Friday, June 27, 2014, was there any problem or misunderstanding between Charly Boy and the government of Imo State or between him and the Executive Governor of the state Owelle Rochas Okorocha? To the best of our knowledge, the answer is in the negative, unless somebody has any fact in the contrary.
“Right from the time the late Justice fell sick up to the time he died, and preparations for the burial began, Charly Boy and the entire Oputa family had worked hand-in-glove or in tandem with Governor Rochas Okorocha, and by extension with the Imo State Government to make the burial befitting and successful. There was no cause for alarm or worry.
“The only issue on which the State Government somewhat disagreed with the Oputa family was the initial burial programme drafted and published by the family, which the State Government considered lopsided or not suitable for a man like the late Justice. To that effect, a new burial committee was set up with Senator Uche Chukwumerije as Chairman. And the committee came up with a suitable burial programme.
“When the Justice fell sick and was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, Governor Okorocha was the first to be there. The idea to fly him overseas for better medical attention was his own and he played his role religiously. When the legal icon also died, Governor Okorocha cancelled his oversea trip and rushed to the family in Oguta to condone with them and promised to work with the family to ensure that he was given a befitting burial.
“Throughout the burial arrangement, Charly Boy was always in touch with Governor Okorocha and with the Attorney-General of the State, Mr. Chukwuma Machume (SAN) who was a committed member of the burial committee. There was no communication gap at all between Charly Boy, the entire Oputa family, and Governor Okorocha, or the State Government as been falsely claimed in some quarters.
“The Special Day of Tribute organized by the State Government was on Wednesday, 25th June 2014 preceding the funeral service on Friday, 27 June 2014. Then what happened between Wednesday and Thursday to warrant the unfortunate incident on Friday. As a matter of fact, nothing happened. It was a kind of “Palace Coup” hatched and executed by some politicians of Imo extraction from Abuja and most of them governorship aspirants. They deceived Mr. Charly Boy into acting wrongly. And there was reason for that emergency “Coup” inside the church.”
