The United States of America Embassy in Nigeria has made changes to its visa issuance policy. According to Ms Stacie Hankins, the Consular Chief of the United States Embassy in Nigeria, Port Harcourt, Rivers States has been added as a DHL collection and pickup centre. This is in addition to Lagos and Port Harcourt. Ms Hankins spoke to City People and select media houses at the US Consulate in Lagos via video conferencing from Abuja. Applicants who are interviewed in Lagos or Abuja can choose to pick up their passports in Port Harcourt, in addition to existing facilities in Abuja and Lagos.
Similarly, applicants can submit their passports to the Port Harcourt collection centre as part of the U.S. Missions to Nigeria’s drop renewal program. Passport collection via the centre in Port Harcourt will take one additional day. Individuals whose visa applications are approved can expect their passports within four days. Drop box applicants can expect their passports within 7-10 days. The Embassy is also reminding applicants in Nigeria that the DS-160 non-immigrant visa application confirmation number used to schedule visa interviews match the application confirmation page that is brought to the interview.
Applicants who do not meet this criterion will not be interviewed and will have to purchase a new fee receipt to book another appointment. She says the United States welcomes all qualified applicants to visit the United States. According to her, “We hope that Nigerians’ desire to visit our beautiful country will continue to grow, and we look forward to working with our partners to allow qualified tourists and business travellers to do so.” Jen Bauer, NIV Unit Chief also fielding questions from journalists in Lagos disclosed that about 15400 immigrant visas were approved in Nigeria in the last year.
