Lodgers At House 139 In Itire Area Of Lagos Have Been Attacked By A Gang Of Armed Robbers, Who Reportedly Promised To Come Back Soon To Raid Them Again

Lodgers at house 139 on Itire Road in the Idi-Araba area of Lagos State have been attacked by a gang of armed robbers, who reportedly promised to come back soon to raid them again.

It was gathered that the robbers, said to be about six in number, stormed the house at about 2.30am on the New Year’s Eve, wielding guns, cutlasses among others.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the attackers gained entry into the storey building through an adjoining fence, and raided from one apartment to another.

A resident was said to have put a distress call across to the Olosan Police Station, Mushin, but the policemen did not arrive at the place until one hour after.

The gang reportedly shot into the air to scare away the police team, which arrived at the troubled area around 3.30am.

However, one of the suspected robbers, Lukman Oladejo, was eventually arrested.

Our correspondent learnt that the hoodlums carted away property and money.

A woman, who resides in the topmost floor, Mrs. Muslimat Olaleye, said the attack was the third in six months, adding that her family lost about N400,000 to the robbers on the fateful day.

She said, “They collected N100,000 cash and jewellery worth N250,000 from me. They requested for gold. It was as if they had been guided because it was only me they asked for such. They also dispossessed my children of their phones and wristwatches.

“They shot into the air when the police arrived and told us that they would come back another time because we managed to invite the police and they were unable to finish their operation.

“This is the third time we will be experiencing robbery in six months. Two months ago, they came in the day when everybody had gone to work.”

Another resident, Ridwan Salami, said he was injured while he was trying to prevent one of the robbers from entering the apartment he shares with his mother, Abeni.

He said, “My mother was indisposed on the fateful day and we had no dime on us. She has been hypertensive since some robbers attacked us three months ago and made off with almost all her property.

“I thought the robbers might injure us since there was nothing for them to steal. So, I decided to prevent one of them from coming into the apartment. I injured my wrist in the process.”

Other victims ─ Abanobi Frank, Daniel Bassy, Olasupo Najeem, Okunade, Okeh, Adeniyi – said they lost money and phones to the robbers.

The Chairman of the community development association in the area, Mr. Rasheed Bakare, lamented that robbery had become rampant in the neighbourhood, urging the police to beef up security.

He said, “We want the police to intensify efforts and ensure that those arrested are prosecuted. There are instances when we hand over robbers to the police, but they were eventually released.

“We also appeal to the police to allow us to have a vigilance group to complement their work. We formed one among ourselves in the past, but some policemen on a patrol arrested them.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident.

He said weapons were recovered from Oladejo, adding that he had been transferred to the State Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

“A cutlass and one locally-made gun were recovered from one Lukman Oladejo. He has been transferred to SARS for further investigation. Our men are making efforts to track down other fleeing members of the gang.

“We urge residents not to entertain any fear as surveillance is being mounted on the area to ensure safety of lives and property,” Nwosu said.
