Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) on Thursday identified lack of facilities for upcoming players as a major challenge facing the development of the game at the grassroots.
Farouk Baba-Inna, Technical Director of NSF, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that athletes in such categories were students.
He said that the athletes would need to train with adequate facilities to develop their skills.
“Scrabble is an indoor game, and schools should provide halls with boards, tables and chairs in a conductive environment– where coaches can use to train prospective players,’’ he said.
According to him, such problems can be addressed in schools if parents would assist by donating equipment.
“It is an opportunity for parents to contribute their quota toward the development of scrabble in the country at the grassroots, and help to improve the skills of their wards in the game,’’ he said.
He urged the authorities to organise suitable competitions for the young players.
Baba-Inna also called on parents to show interest in the participation of their wards in scrabble.
“Parents should make time to come and watch their wards in training or competition; this will further motivate them.
“They are still young at this stage, their parents presence during competitions will encourage them to be committed to the game,’’ he said. (NAN)
