A member of the House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara (APC, Bauchi), has said that the peculiar circumstances the North-east geo-political zone presently finds itself make it the right place to produce the next speaker of the House in the incoming 8th National Assembly.
Dogara, who is a ranking member of the House, therefore called on the leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to, in the spirit of justice and fairness, cede the position of the House Speaker to the North-east, adding that the zone does not need to beg before the party does the right thing.
The lawmaker was speaking yesterday in Abuja during a media parley attended by his colleagues including members-elect from both APC and the PDP to formally announce his intention to contest the office of the Speaker of the House.
“We all know that this insurgency is most endemic in that our zone. We are confident also of the fact that the leadership of APC has promised ‘change’ and this ‘change’ drove people from their comfort zones, some even risking their lives to ensure that they voted for this party.
“I know that there can’t be ‘change’ if we don’t emphasise the virtues of justice and fairness. As a zone, we don’t have to go cap in hand begging for anything. Our expectation is that the party will on its own look at the plight of our people and say this position should go to the North-east,” Dogara said.”
