Right now, in Lekki the recent opening of MVP Lounge has become the talk of the town since Friday, 29th August 2014 when the soft opening of the club took place. For those who are still wondering what MVP means, let’s quickly tell you that it is the new Bar, Restaurant and Lounge that popular comedian AY whose real name is Ayo Richard Makun floated. That date was AY’s birthday and he decided to have a small bash which also marked the soft opening of the club and the party turned out to be a big party that attracted all the big boys and babes on the Island.
For those who could not make it, the news of MVP came as a pleasant surprise as AY had made his mark as a leading comedian, whose AY Show has become the hottest comedy show in Nigeria right now. Why did Ayo Makun float this new hangout, he was asked. He told City People the reason last week, when he conducted the magazine round the classy lounge located near Lekki Phase 1 Gate. “The idea is to have another line of business within the frame work of Entertainment, generally. We all understand that when you have a brand name, you can as well use that same name and the pedigree that the name has given to you. You can extend it to other businesses. When I thought about it the first thing that came to mind, which was still within the circle of entertainment, was to open a place where people can come and relax, have fun, and have a seasoned niteclub.
“This is coming from the background of when we do our shows, sometimes we want to have after-parties and a lot of people are thinking where the venue is it going to be and we said why don’t we just keep it within. We have the shows, and we can as well have a place to host people. We want to have that kind of place where a lot of people will say this is where we want to go and relax and have fun. And that was what gave birth to MVP.”
What’s the meaning of MVP?
“MVP means Most Valuable Player. The place is set up to accommodate Most Valuable Players in different sectors, as a way of having a place to come and relax.”
How easy was it coming up with the name?
“It was pretty easy. As a matter of fact, I have been used to the name MVP, from playing football. Everytime I find myself training with my groups, if I get to score a goal, the first thing they call me is MVP. I train at Fun Turf. It’s a set. Sometimes when I come late, I have people choosing me ahead of time, and others will tease me that okay, for your mind, you be MVP now. The name just stuck. In giving the place the name MVP, I had to research it and I looked at it from a broader perspective so that people don’t just relate it to football only, and begin to see this place as a sports place. So, the idea is to look for Most Valuable Players in the different sectors like Oil and Gas, Business, Politics, Sports. We are saying this is their place, this is where they can all come to have fun.”

A few days back, AY had a soft opening of the hangout. What was the concept behind that? “It was designed to mark my birthday. The idea was to test-run the sound, the lights and services, so that we can learn one or two things to really help us when we would be coming up with the grand opening on the 26th of September. As a matter of fact, the soft opening really did help because now, we are aware of some of the things we need to improve on for the grand opening. Immediately, after the grand opening we will be opened for business. So its a good time to correct everything that we need to correct. The grand opening is on the 26th of September. It’s going to be an all-white attire event. Everybody is expected to come in all-white”.
How is MVP arranged in terms of sections? “We have the Main Room which is more like the hub of the club where the party commences. From the main room is something that a lot of people were judging to have even surpassed what people will see as VIP in other places within and outside town. We have the Goldroom. It is a VIP room. We segmented the club in a way whereby you can define where you want to be but we also did not detach the fact that you can be within MVP and feeling the vibes from other areas. It’s all on one floor. And we have the aisle, (the walkway,) for those who just want to hang around and observe what is going on. That is their own fun. We have the Diamond Room as well. That comes with membership. It is for the really very big people in town who really want to party.”
“But they don’t want to be seen mixing up with their children (laughs). We have this room for them, for that class of big people who want to come to MVP. It comes with a package, with an access pass. You don’t just come into the Diamond Room without being a diamond member who has an access card which will take you into the room. We also have the Game Room designed for all the games-playstation, pool, and of course you can play Scrabble, Chess and any kind of indoor game that the place can accommodate. The interior and design of MVP is mind-blowing. How did he achieve such exquisite furnishing? “The interior and the design of this place was put together by my wife. She is the MD CEO of Midas Interior. She has done pretty great with this interior because a lot of people who have been here have commended her and she has been getting jobs. I give it all to her”.
